BIO

With a passion for music, skateboarding and street art, Adam DeVarney is not the type of artist you would expect from the mountains and hills of Vermont. Although living most of his life in the Green Mountain State, Adam studied art in Brooklyn, NY, at the Pratt Institute. Even after graduating and returning home to Vermont, a part of the city never really left him. Influences, of which, are prevalent in his artwork.

The work itself is illustrative and complex in construction and design, which is evidence of his analytical character. His art is a synthesis of texture and content, built layer upon layer, creating a dream-like history or narrative. The paintings are composed of drawings, hand colored paper, found imagery, and acrylics upon hand made wood panels. There is a nostalgic and retro aesthetic to the work that is most linked to his interest in printed material predating the 80's. It is not uncommon to find bits of how-to manuals, schematic drawings, dated photography and typography hidden within each piece.

Deceptively simplistic at surface level, it is the idea of “sampling”, as DeVarney refers to it, that is the driving force behind the work. Adam is interested in the concept of layering abstracted thought. His work investigates the potential for disparate content to be purposefully curated into a cohesive message or context. Under the assumption that people naturally form associations to the sampled content, he strives to create art that is uniquely reflective to its viewers; drawing reference not only from his personal life and inspirations but from the viewer's history and memories. The work is designed to be an uninhibited, provocative and challenging experience.
